High volume error when registering

Problem
We are unable to enroll a patron in a program due to an error message indicating high volume. What does this mean?
Error Message
"Due to high volume, the selected <item> was in use during your purchase and the process could not be completed. Please attempt your <purchaseType> again."
Solution
Although rare, this message is expected and can happen during high-volume registration periods or during high-volume business routines (ie. running massive pattern reservations, reports or archiving records.)
Every time a section is added to the cart there is a brief lock on that record so a count can be done on total enrollments to make sure the max enrollment number is not exceeded. The more people you have adding the same item to the cart, the more "short locks" are put on the section which increases the probability of someone else seeing the message about the high volume. Because there are so many people registering, often by the time you add the item to the cart again there are no spots remaining.
It means the item you were trying to access was in use by someone else and couldn't be accessed by you to complete the process. This comes up the more something is in demand. We have to lock the record temporarily and although it's fast if they are enough requests coming in trying to access the same record you can run into conflicts.
Steps For Solution
- Simply wait and try again in a few moments and the lock on the file should be gone and the system will recover from the heavy volume.
- If this persists then pull the log files from the server and reach out to Vermont Systems Support to make sure that there is nothing else causing the issue, like a rule or fee criteria.
