Server Recommendation Check Up
- Database server recommendations to consider:
- RecTrac Server O/S options for 11.7: Server 2016 and 2019.
- Server 2022 won’t be until Progress 12; late Summer release?
- Internet Explorer is EOL; please have Edge or Chrome loaded on server.
- RecTrac 3.1 will not load on IE and a valid browser is necessary on server to use software.
- Ensure local security recommendations are performed
- This refers to TLS 1.2 being enabled while 1.0 & 1.1 are disabled.
- Tools like IISCrypto can be used for easier Registry changes.
- Recommend LAN HTTPS Configuration – VS can assist with the setup (is chargeable)
- New VM Host Recommendations
- RAID 1+0 (or Raid 10) for best RAID performance.
- SSDs > HDDs; especially if RAID 5 or 6 being. HDDs on RAID 6 will be slowest performance.
- CPU and RAM must be static allocation, real time on demand allocation doesn’t work with Progress.
Server Backup & AV
- All Servers should be creating VS RecTrac-generated Backups via Backup Profile.
- VM Backups of entire server still recommended but should not be sole solution. This is due to the VM backup’s main purpose is to back up the <x>:\VSI3\Backup folder. Live VM backups of the running Database will have a high chance of being invalid.
- 3rd Party Backup Utilities like Carbonite should only be backing up <x>:\VSI3\Backup
- Depending on frequency runs and how long it takes to backup to their Cloud, this will affect backup file integrity. On demand backup changes are NOT recommended. Preferred are timed/scheduled. If the VS RecTrac backup is generating and Carbonite is running to backup the file during creation, it will corrupt the backup and could do the same for Live to Demo processes.
- SentinalOne and 2012 / 2012 R2
- Per Progress, this is a chance it will not be compatible with OpenEdge. The issue will be if it’s installed, Appservers will not start up. There is no solution and will be no solution to this. Must be removed from Server.
- AV should omit <x>:\VSI3\ folders during scans
- Some Anti-Virus can be more “intrusive” to the software and cause problems during scans with running Appservers and Databases. Cause lock ups or performance issues.
File Clean-up
- Logs, receipts, etc.?
- Logging Settings
- Can set Logs for Appservers & Webspeeds to Error Only if not actively troubleshooting.
- IIS Logs (C:\inetpub\logs) should be cleaned regularly on both RecTrac and WebTrac Servers.
- Logging Settings
- Reclaiming Disc Space
- How many backups do you need?
- Truncate Log Files – This can cause 502 Errors with WebTrac if not performed
- Working Directory Cleanup – can be done while things are running
- DB Extent Check (Scheduled)
- Document Purge Scheduled Event
- Validating Backups with Live to Demo
- What is an ST file?
- Getting rid of older versions of Progress information
- If you’ve been with VS for a while, you might have Progress 11.3 and 11.7, what can you remove?
- DB Utilities
- VIC Deploy for WAN has no DBUtil, manually move utilities.exe from RT server (X:\vsi3\misc)
Performance Settings
- 3.1.10.15.xx or higher
- Dump and Load
- Increasing starting agents before big registrations
- Waivers as new doc or separate page (~150 char)
- Coming Updates to server OS and PAS OE
- Will support more modern Server OS
- Current Limit ’19, this would bring us to ‘22
Want to Ignore all of this? Consider moving to VS Cloud Hosting
