Solution
Usually this error is a result of the client not connecting to RecTrac using the full URL needed.
Correct URL:
https://YourServerName/gui/wbwsc/client.wsc/login.html?InterfaceParameter=RecTrac_WAN_1
Incorrect, Partial URL:
https://YourServerName/gui/wbwsc/client.wsc/
Make sure users are logging into RecTrac using login.html?InterfaceParameter= after client.wsc within their Rectrac URL.
I have to assume you are probably now connecting using the fully qualified domain name which is why you are no longer getting the error.

They are on LAN, so should I still be looking at the same URL but without the WAN?
I just checked up on your LAN URL.
Good LAN URL:
https://RECTRACDB.ADS.COT/wbwsc/client.wsc/login.html?InterfaceParameter=RecTrac_1
Bad LAN URL I imagine they are using:
https://RECTRACDB.ADS.COT/wbwsc/client.wsc/
You can always go back to the database server and drop down the RecTrac 3.1 shortcut found in C:\VSI3\Misc\Icons which contains the fully qualified domain name.
