How to trim AppServers and/or WebSpeed Agents in RecTrac 3.1
Problem
What is 'trimming' an AppServer or WebSpeed Agent and how do you do it in 3.1?
Solution
Trimming Agents essentially allows normal operations to continue without impacting any users. You can get the same results after loading patches by stopping and restarting the brokers, but more planning is needed as it could impact users trying to use the system.
Trimming Agents is something that happens on the Server where Progress is installed. Depending on your network setup you may not need to be on the server, itself. You will actually want to trim the agents on the AppServer EventLive and WebSpeed CLIENTLive.
Here are the steps.
1a. If on the Server: Open a web browser and type 'localhost:9093' (without the quotation marks) into the Address URL bar. You should get a login prompt. By default, the credentials are:
Login = admin
Password = admin
Your setup may vary.
1b. If on a client and network rules allow: Open a web browser and enter ' :9093' (without the quotation marks) in to the Address URL bar. For Example: rectracserver1:9093. You should get a login prompt. By default, the credentials are:
Login = admin
Password = admin
Your setup may vary.
2. You will see a collection of resources: AppServer, Database, NameServer, WebSpeed and others.
3. Under the AppServer section, click on the EVENTLive > Server Pool Control.
4. Note how many Active servers are in the Servers State window.
5. Near the top, select the Add option and change it to Trim in the drop down.
6. Change the number of servers to the right from 1 to the number of Active Servers. You want to trim all.
7. Click Submit. You will get a message regarding the Command to Execute the trim. Click OK.
8. Refresh the page and verify that an agent auto started. If more than one is listed, verify the Started Date/time to make sure all agents are newly started. (If an agent was busy when you attempted to trim, it wont restart and you will need to repeat the process).
9. Near the top of the window there is a 'Resources' link. Click that to get back to the main page of the OpenEdge Explorer.
10. Scroll down and find the ClientLive and click on that. Click on Server Pool Control and repeat steps like you did for the AppServer.
11. Exit from the web browser when done. There is no need to log out.
