Problem
I am experiencing an apostrophe issue when attempting a record import for activity sections. In all instances in both the Long and Short Description fields the apostrophe has been replaced with a question mark symbol.
Solution
You will need to edit your import file in Notepad to replace all instances of the apostrophe currently in the import file, with the Notepad version of an apostrophe.
Notes:
In addition to Apostrophes, other special characters may cause similar complications with a record import for the following reason:
If opting to Copy and Paste text from a pre-generated document then Vermont Systems highly recommends using .txt or .rtf file documents as the source. Using programs such as Microsoft Word and .pdfs as your source is not recommended because they insert thousands of extra - often unseen - HTML characters into the code that result in problems ranging from unexpected formatting issues in RecTrac to exceeding the character count in certain fields.
Steps For Solution
- Open your csv or txt import file in Notepad.
- Highlight the apostrophe (or other special character) causing the import issue.
- Click ctrl + H to open the replace window.
- Leave the value that is displayed in Find what.
- Type in an apostrophe (or other special character) in Replace with.
- Click Replace All.
- Click File > Save.
- Close Notepad and return to RecTrac.
Attempt the record import again. These special characters should now be displayed properly.
