Question
We use RecTrac and VIC with the ClickOnce install. When RecTrac 3.1 has an update, does VIC get updated automatically? Or do RecTrac and VIC have independent update schedules and processes?
Answer
They are updated independently of each other. However, a new version of VIC will always be packaged in an update to RecTrac. Put another way, you can have an update to RecTrac without having an update to VIC, but you'll never have an update to VIC without having an update to RecTrac.
When you run VIC.exe (not as a Windows Service), it checks for updates every time you start it by clicking the icon. If it finds an update, you may notice a small installation window with a progress bar on it. When done, it automatically opens the VIC application window.
When you run VIC as a service, the service checks for updates every time it starts. If the workstation is shut down and restarted on a daily basis, then it will be updated accordingly as long as the password for the User Account used for Log On in the Service's properties has not expired. In the VIC Interface Profile, there is a fallback option for updating VIC in the event that it's running as a Windows Service and the RecTrac User doesn't have rights to stop/restart the Service or even reboot the workstation. In this case, they would do the following:
- Login to RecTrac using Internet Explorer web browser (version 10 or higher).
- Go to Profile Assignments.
- Find the VIC Interface profile that is linked to their user or their workstation (in the center column). Highlight it and click the Update button.
- On the VIC Installation tab, insure that the Service/Installation field is set to Install/Update Service.
- Click the 'Submit 'Update' Command to VIC' button.
- Click Save or Cancel to exit the VIC Interface Profile.
Note: 3.1.9.2 (February 2019) is the final version for VIC using the ClickOnce installation method. Vermont Systems will be deprecating the VIC ClickOnce install at some point in the future. After deprecating ClickOnce, the new VIC using Windows Installer will be your only option. As with VIC ClickOnce, the new VIC Windows Installers updates automatically.
