VIC Auto Install: Installation and Run-time Instructions
RecTrac 3.1
Table of Contents
This document goes through the process of preparing for and running an automated installation of Vermont Integration Client (VIC). Using this process, you can deploy the VIC using your Active Directory Server’s Group Policy management. Automating the installation of VIC will save you from having to visit each workstation physically in order to install or update VIC.
Before You Begin
· Create a VIC Admin user for the Domain; make the user part of the Local Admin group for all of your target workstations. The VIC Admin user does not need to be the Domain administrator.
· RecTrac has a functional VIC Profile(s) configured and linked in Profile Assignments. Vermont Systems recommends testing a manual install from your profile to make sure it works as configured.
· The Network Share location where your setup.msi and setup.mstfiles will reside need the following Permissions
· Folder Share Permissions: Add Domain computers with "Read" permissions and "Everyone" with Read.
· Folder Security Permissions: Add Domain computers with "Read and Execute." This is mandatory. "Everyone" can also be on the folder with Read and Execute, though this is optional.
· Client workstations must powered up in order for VIC to be deployed.
· Vermont Systems recommends running the VIC AutoInstall after normal business hours as to not affect daily operations and processing on the target workstations.
Download VICAutoInstall.ZIP
1 Using a .file transfer client program, log in to sftp.vermontsystems.com.
2 Refer to Vermont Systems Knowledge Base Entry #1516 for the current login credentials.
· Passwords are case-sensitive.
3 Once you are logged in, browse to/File Updates And Drivers/RecTrac/3.1/VICAutoInstall/
4 Download the VIC AutoInstall.zip and save it to a temporary folder on your workstation.
5 Exit the sFTP site when done.
Run Setup.exe
1 Open or extract the VICAutoInstall.zip.
2 Right-click on setup.exe, and select Run as Administrator. Use the defaults for each step, and click Next until you’ve completed the installation, at which time you will click Close. The default installation path will be C:\Program Files\Vermont Systems, Inc\VICAutoInstall\.
Run VICAutoInstall.exe
1 In Windows Explorer, browse to C:\ProgramFiles\Vermont Systems, Inc\VICAutoInstall
2 Right-click on VICAutoInstall.exe and select Run as Administrator. The VIC Auto Install screen will open.
3 In the Location of MSI File field, enter the path to where you saved and unzipped the VIC AutoInstall.zipfile in Download VICAutoInstall.zip above.
4 Accept the default entry in the Run VIC Installation as VIC Admin User field or overwrite as needed. Then enter that User ID's Password and Confirm it.
5 What you input in the Initial VIC Install URL is dependent upon how you wish to install VIC. This comes from your existing VIC profile.
· If you are using the VIC Service, your entry will look something like this:
http://<VICDeploymentServerName>:4180/VIC/exe/VICexe.application?cmd=Main%09service%09install%09yes
· If you are using the VIC EXE, then your entry will look something like this:
https://<VICDeploymentServerName>.<Domain>/VIC/exe/VICexe.application?cmd=Main%09service%09install%09yes&Cmd1=Main%09Certificates%09ImportPFX%09%0965110,65111,65130,65131,65132,65133,65134,65135,65136,65137,65138,6513
Note for Vermont Systems Fully-Hosted Customers: You will use one of the two URLs shown below. Contact the Vermont Systems Hosting Team or look in your VIC profile to determine which URL (apps1 or apps2) you need.
https://apps1.vermontsystems.com/VIC/exe/VICexe.application?cmd=Main%09service%09install%09yes
https://apps2.vermontsystems.com/VIC/exe/VICexe.application?cmd=Main%09service%09install%09yes
6 To obtain the Initial VIC Install URL:
· Open RecTrac using Internet Explorer or Edge and browse to Profile Assignments.
· Find your VIC profile and click Update. Then click the VIC Installation tab.
· Click Install/Update VIC.
· Copy the URL that appears in the pop-up message and paste it into the Initial VIC Install URL field.
· Click Cancel on the pop-up message and exit your VIC profile.
Note: When the Auto Install runs, the system will use the settings on the VIC Installation tab of the profile you select here for all other VIC installations.
Vermont Systems highly recommends a using a VIC profile that has "Import VSI Standard Localhost Certificate (Recommend)" as its Certificate Creation option and has the Configure VIC Service During Installation option selected/enabled.
7 Determine whether you wish to Set the VIC Executable to Run at Workstation Startup option.
· If Enabled: The VIC.EXE will be installed for all Windows users that will log into the target workstation. Additionally, VIC.EXE will start automatically whenever a user logs into Windows on the workstation.
· Disabled: Users will have to start the VIC.EXE manually (from a desktop icon) when logging into Windows on the workstation.
· If you are NOT installing the VIC.EXE, then you can skip this option.
8 The Standard User VIC Startup field will auto-populate.
9 Click Create .MST file to Install VIC. A prompt opens stating that your MST File is now created and the path is shown for reference. Click OK and Exit.
10 You can now push out the MSI using your network software deployment tool of choice.
Deploying the VIC MST/MSI through Microsoft Active Directory’s GPO
Vermont Systems recommends using Microsoft Active Directory Group Policy to run the VIC deployment. If you are unfamiliar with Group Policy Objects (GPO), the following URLs may be helpful:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/desktop/srvnodes/group-policy
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-desktop-optimization-pack/agpm/
Additional GPO Information
1 Vermont Systems found the GPO settings at the following URL useful:
https://serverfault.com/questions/44257/group-policy-installation-failed-error-1274
2 In GPO, enable the option to Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon.
3 In GPO, enable the option to Specify startup policy processing wait time and use a value of "120 seconds."
4 Make sure you require trust ofthe Vermont Systems code signing certificate to avoid an extra warning message during the install. Refer to LocalHostCertFix Install Readme.pdf, which is available on the Vermont Systems sFTP site under: File Updates AndDrivers/RecTrac/3.1/VICLocalHostCertFix for further information.
5 If your VIC deployment is coming from a WAN/Internet location, then in GPO, you need to add the VIC Deployment Domain to Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer/Edge (Internet Options • Security.
Note: ALL Vermont Systems Fully Hosted customers are WAN/Internet. If you are a Vermont Systems Fully-Hosted customer, then you can use https://*.vermontsystems.com,which will cover both the https://apps1.vermontsystems.comand https://app2.vermontsystems.comdomains.
